Recently, at an international conference on smart and sustainable seaport development in Hai Phong, experts, economists, and representatives from large corporations around the world gathered to discuss the city’s prospects. The experts shared their insights on goals, strategies, and plans for the sustainable growth of Hai Phong’s marine economy, offering valuable input on the city’s deep-sea port development direction.

Hai Phong is home to nearly 40 ports, making it the second-largest commercial port in Vietnam and the largest in the North. The volume of goods passing through the port continues to increase annually, with an average growth rate in the double digits. The city focuses on developing deep-water seaports to cater to international shipping needs to become a premier transshipment port. The container port area at Lach Huyen is a key focus, with plans underway to build eight wharves.

Specifically, since 2018, berths No. 1 and No. 2 have been operated with a total length of 750 meters and an annual throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEUs. The construction is ongoing for four additional wharves, with berths No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 totaling 1,650 meters in length and a throughput capacity of 3 million TEUs per year. The city’s future plans include the developing berths No. 7 and No. 8, with a combined length of 900 meters and an estimated throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEUs per year.

The development of the Lach Huyen Port area, with its eight deep-water ports, industrial parks, and the Xuan Cau non-tariff zone, is not only enhancing the attractiveness of Hai Phong as a seaport city but also laying the foundation for further growth in the region. With a vibrant port sector and strategic investments, Hai Phong City is well-positioned to achieve its development goals for the 2030 – 2045 period./.
