66 years ago, in May 7th 1954, Vietnamese people and army conducted the strategic battle and made one of the most resounding victories in the national history of defeating invaders, that was Dien Bien Phu victory. The event ended the long resistance war against the French colonialists to seize independence and freedom for the nation.

In March 13th, 1954, the Dien Bien Phu campaign began. After 56 days and nights with lots of hardship, at 3 p.m in May 7th 1954, the Vietnamese army and people conducted the general attack to the Muong Thanh center. General Do-Cat-To-ri and the entire Chiefs of Staff at the Dien Bien Phu entrenched fortification were caught alive, the remaining French troops surrendered. The Dien Bien Phu campaign forced the French government to sign the Geveve convention on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam. In that great victory, the role of general Vo Nguyen Giap – who made the historic decision, changed from the “quick attack, quick defeat” position to ” firm attack, firm marching” and contributed to the historic victory.

The Dien Bien Phu victory was the victory of a peace-loving nation, who is always thirsty for living in independence and freedom, ready to sacrifice for protecting the national independence, sovereignty and intact territory. The victory has been a great encouragement for the entire people and army in the national protection and construction cause./.
